From Local Skills to National Opportunity: A New Path for Eastern Kentucky Workers

Posted on 1 day ago
Transferable Skills to the Nuclear Energy Field

What if the skills you already have could take you further?

If you’ve worked in electrical systems, maintenance, or industrial settings, there’s a growing opportunity that might look a little different, but could completely change what’s possible for your future.

Across the country, companies like WECTEC Staffing Services LLC, a subsidiary of Westinghouse Electric Company LLC, are hiring for high-demand roles in nuclear energy, wind power, and industrial field services. And more Eastern Kentuckians are stepping into those roles every day.

These aren’t jobs that require starting over. In many cases, they build directly on the kind of hands-on experience people in this region already have.

What Kind of Work Are We Talking About?

These roles are technical, hands-on, and centered around maintaining critical infrastructure. While job titles may sound specialized, the day-to-day work often overlaps with skills many workers already use.

You might find yourself:

  • Troubleshooting electrical or mechanical systems
  • Repairing valves, equipment, or control systems
  • Reading schematics, blueprints, or technical manuals
  • Performing testing, calibration, or diagnostics
  • Working directly with tools, machinery, and field equipment

Positions include roles like:

  • Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technicians
  • Valve Technicians
  • Field Machinists
  • Electronics Technicians
  • Wind Technicians
  • Radiation Protection Technicians

If you’ve worked in manufacturing, maintenance, or skilled trades, there’s a good chance parts of this already feel familiar.

What Is Nuclear Outage Work?

One of the biggest opportunities tied to these roles is something called nuclear outage work.

At certain times of the year, power plants shut down for scheduled maintenance. During that time, teams of skilled workers are brought in to inspect, repair, and upgrade critical systems.

Here’s what that typically looks like:

  • Traveling to a job site for a defined period
  • Working extended schedules (often 7 days a week, 12-hour shifts)
  • Performing high-value, technical work in a fast-paced environment
  • Completing the project, then returning home between assignments

It’s demanding work, but it’s also what makes the opportunity different.

A Different Way to Work, and Earn

This isn’t a traditional 9-to-5 job.

Instead, it’s a project-based model that allows workers to concentrate their time and effort into shorter periods, while earning significantly more.

These roles often include:

  • Hourly wages ranging from $36 to $41+
  • Per diem and travel fully covered (lodging, transportation, meals)
  • Overtime, shift work, and double-time opportunities
  • Potential annual earnings of $75,000 to $136,000+

For many workers, that means:

  • Earning more in months than they would locally in a year
  • Having extended time at home between assignments
  • Building long-term financial stability

It’s not just a different job, it’s a different model entirely.

Do You Need Experience in Nuclear or Wind Energy?

Not necessarily.

What matters most is your foundation.

These roles are often a strong fit for individuals who have:

  • Mechanical or electrical experience
  • Hands-on technical skills
  • Experience working with tools, systems, or equipment
  • A willingness to learn and adapt

Backgrounds in manufacturing, maintenance, construction, or industrial work can translate directly into these roles.

And if there are gaps, there may be opportunities to build the skills needed.

What This Could Mean for You

This isn’t just about filling positions, it’s about expanding what’s possible.

For individuals across Eastern Kentucky, these opportunities can mean:

  • Higher wages and stronger earning potential
  • The ability to travel for work while still living at home
  • A pathway into growing industries like energy and infrastructure
  • Long-term career growth, not just a short-term job

It’s a chance to take what you already know and apply it in a bigger way.

Take the First Step

If you’re not sure where you fit, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Through the Eastern Kentucky Talent Network, you can:
