On November 12, Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) hosted an Inspirational Speaker Series event at Hazard Community and Technical College. The event featured Mandi Fugate Sheffel, a Red Fox, Kentucky native and accomplished entrepreneur, writer, and community leader. Speaking to a diverse audience, including students, faculty, staff, and community members, Mandi shared her story of resilience, creativity, and the power of staying connected to one’s roots while building a meaningful career.
The event was part of SOAR’s mission to empower students, entrepreneurs, and community members across Eastern Kentucky, supported by funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) POWER program. This program enables SOAR to deliver impactful initiatives like this event at schools, colleges, and community hubs throughout the region.
A Journey Rooted in Appalachia
Born and raised in the coalfields of Eastern Kentucky, Mandi Fugate Sheffel’s journey reflects a deep connection to her community. As the owner of Read Spotted Newt, an independent bookstore, she has created a space for storytelling, collaboration, and cultural preservation in the heart of Appalachia.
In addition to her entrepreneurial pursuits, Mandi is the Sycamore Fund Project Coordinator at The Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky and serves as the board vice chair for the Appalachian Arts Alliance and Mountain Association.
Her presentation captivated attendees as she detailed her path from her roots in Red Fox to becoming a published author, entrepreneur, and advocate for Appalachia.
Reflections from the Event
The event resonated deeply with the audience, sparking inspiration and thought-provoking conversations. Tony Back, Academic Dean and Chief Campus Administrator of the HCTC Campus, shared impressions:
A great event for students, faculty, and staff, as well as the community, to hear from a local business owner the details of her experience. Her story that led her local bookstore to be where it is today, both in success and location, helped the group to think about their future plans and careers.
SOAR’s Startup Program Coordinator, Danna Barnett, reflected on the broader impact:
This event was an incredible chance for students to hear from a local business owner who not only turned their vision into reality but also transformed obstacles into growth opportunities. Hearing firsthand how challenges were met with resilience and strategic thinking truly resonated with the students. It showed them that with the right mindset, what might seem like setbacks can actually become the stepping stones to success and innovation. It’s a powerful lesson in perseverance and creativity that can inspire their own entrepreneurial journeys.
