Can You Share a Bit About Your Background Before Joining the Program?

Before joining Code Kentucky, I worked in healthcare, especially during COVID. I experienced a challenging work environment where I felt undervalued and started considering a career shift. I’ve always been drawn to tech, helping out in our healthcare office with IT-related issues. When I heard about the SOAR Code Kentucky Tech Program, I felt it was a chance to change my path and dive into something that’s always intrigued me.

What Inspired You to Join SOAR’s Code Kentucky Tech Training Program, and What Were Your Career Goals at the Start?

Seeing how tech could impact daily workflows, especially in healthcare, sparked my interest. Initially, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay in healthcare with my new tech skills or branch out into a different industry. Ultimately, I felt a need to transition away from healthcare and fully embrace tech. SOAR Code Kentucky offered the hands-on experience I was looking for to make this shift confidently.

How Did Your Experience at SOAR Prepare You for a Tech Role?

SOAR – Code Kentucky was great because it was immersive and allowed me to learn at my own pace. The instructors were patient and took the time to make sure I understood each concept before moving on. I also appreciated the project-based learning because it felt real; it wasn’t just reading and quizzes but actual projects I could add to my portfolio.

Can You Describe the Role You Landed After Completing the Program?

I’m currently a web developer, specifically working with WordPress, even though I hadn’t used it before starting my role. Code Kentucky taught me to be adaptable, so I could quickly pick it up on the job. Now, I maintain and update our website, troubleshoot issues, and ensure everything is running smoothly. It’s fulfilling work, and I can see the impact of what I do in real-time.

What Was Your Capstone?

For my capstone, I developed a video game—something I’d always been interested in but never had the skills to create. Working through the coding and design aspects taught me a lot. I also built a website as part of the project, which helped reinforce my understanding of web development and gave me hands-on experience that I still draw from in my current role.

How Did SOAR Help You Stand Out During the Job Application and Interview Process?

The skills I gained at Code Kentucky were pivotal. I went into interviews with project examples, which gave me a leg up. While I didn’t know WordPress initially, my technical foundation was strong, and the employers could see that. They appreciated my dedication to learning and my unique capstone project, which demonstrated creativity and problem-solving—qualities they valued.

What Advice Would You Give to Someone Considering SOAR’s Code Kentucky Tech Training Program?

If you’re considering Code Kentucky or any similar program, choose projects that are meaningful and unique. It’s tempting to stick to common project ideas, but employers notice originality. The projects that helped me stand out were those I was genuinely invested in, even if they weren’t huge or complex. Authentic, personal work will always make a strong impression.

Where Do You See Yourself Going in the Tech Industry Over the Next Few Years?

In the next few years, I hope to start my own business, helping small companies create websites and software that enhance their market presence. I’ve developed a passion for analytics, and I want to help businesses leverage data to grow. The skills I learned at Code Kentucky have set me up to make this dream a reality, and I’m excited for what’s next.
