From Library Shelves to Remote Success: How SOAR’s Code Kentucky Program Opened New Doors

Posted on 1 year ago

For nearly two decades, Allison Chandler, a dedicated librarian, spent her days organizing books and assisting patrons. But a desire for change and a passion for learning led her to discover SOAR’s Code Kentucky program—a free, hands-on tech program designed to help Kentuckians transition into remote and tech-focused careers. Whether you’re looking to start fresh, enhance your skills, or break into a remote job, Code Kentucky provides the training, mentorship, and resources you need to succeed. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the opportunities that await when you take the first step.

A Lifelong Career in Libraries

For nearly 18 years, her work revolved around the public library. Starting as a shelving assistant and working her way up to circulation clerk, she enjoyed the familiarity of her role but yearned for something more dynamic.

The Spark That Inspired Change

An interest in coding and the growing appeal of remote work inspired her to explore new possibilities. That’s when Allison found SOAR’s Code Kentucky program. “I wanted to learn about coding and work remotely,” she shared, and Code Kentucky provided the perfect opportunity to turn that dream into reality.

Practical Skills with Real-World Applications

Through SOAR’s Code Kentucky program, she learned essential tools like Google Meet, Docs, and Slides, which became invaluable in her new remote role. The program’s supportive environment and the practical, hands-on approach gave her the confidence to take on a new career path.

Landing a Remote Role

After leaving her library job due to health reasons, SOAR stepped in to support her remote job search. Their guidance paid off—she secured a position with Support Ninja, where she now books appointments and verifies insurance for a chain of dermatologist offices, all from the comfort of her home.

Words of Wisdom for Future Participants

Her advice for anyone considering Code Kentucky?

“Do it. No matter your age or background, it’s never too late to try something new. The support from the staff and mentors of Code Kentucky and SOAR is phenomenal.”

Looking Ahead

With her sights set on mastering her current role and embracing the flexibility of remote work, she’s excited for the future.

“In the next few years, I hope to learn all I can at my new job and enjoy working from home.”

Amanda’s inspiring journey proves that it’s never too late to start fresh, embrace new challenges, and build a rewarding career.
