WASHINGTON, DC – The Big Sandy Airport in Martin County was recently awarded a nearly $70,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct an environmental study for a new runway expansion and safety project. The grant award is part of the $3.18 billion Airport Improvement Program (AIP) that Congressman Rogers, Principal Officer of SOAR, supported as a member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee.
Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation also awarded a $4.4 million grant to the Big Sandy Airport to expand the runway and improve aviation safety. This new grant will ensure the project meets all environmental regulations.
“As we work to create new jobs and recruit new industries to Southern and Eastern Kentucky, we must ensure that our rural airports are accessible and reliable for business travel,” said Congressman Rogers. “These recent grants will help prepare the Big Sandy Airport for future growth and development in the region. I applaud local leaders for applying for important grant opportunities that are essential to maintaining and supporting aviation operations in coal country.”
According to the FAA’s most recent economic analysis, U.S. civil aviation accounts for $1.6 trillion in total economic activity and supports nearly 11 million jobs.
Approximately $2.7 million in FAA grants have been announced this summer for the following airports in Eastern Kentucky as part of the AIP program: London-Corbin Regional Airport in Laurel County, Big Sandy Regional Airport in Martin County, Wendell-Ford Airport in Perry County, West Liberty Airport in Morgan County, and Tucker-Guthrie Memorial Airport in Harlan County.
In May, Congressman Rogers and Governor Matt Bevin visited the Big Sandy Airport to announce a new Aviation Mechanics Technician (AMT) School in partnership with Eastern Kentucky University. Students will have the opportunity to earn an AMT certification through the Big Sandy Community and Technical College and the Big Sandy Airport where they will get hands-on experience on airplanes in local hangars.
