Now that you’ve taken the first step, here’s what to expect next.
Step 1: Let’s Chat
Within the next one to two business days, a member of our team will reach out by email, phone, or text. This conversation is all about getting to know you—your goals, skills, and any challenges you might be facing in your job search.
During our call, we will discuss:
- The types of jobs you are interested in
- Your work experience and any skills you want to highlight
- Any barriers you may be facing in your job search
- Resources that can help strengthen your resume and increase your chances of getting hired
If you are unsure about your next career move, that is completely fine. Our team can help you explore different pathways and identify opportunities that align with your strengths and interests.
Step 2: Preparing Your Resume
Your resume is a key part of the hiring process, and it’s important to ensure it is formatted correctly. Many employers and application tracking systems automatically reject resumes that are not in PDF or Word Document format, so double-check that yours meets this standard.
If you need assistance formatting, uploading, or improving your resume, our Digital Navigator, Ashley Smith, is available to help. You can reach her at ashley@soar-ky.org for personalized support.
Step 3: Strengthening Your Skills with Free Training
Job seekers with professional certifications are nearly three times more likely to land an interview. If you want to boost your resume and expand your skill set, we offer several free training programs designed to help you stand out to employers.
- Code Kentucky – A six-month training program focused on Web Development, Software Development, and Data Analytics. Participants gain hands-on experience and have the opportunity to present their capstone projects to potential employers.
- Generation SaaS Sales Program – A nine-week paid internship ($20 per hour, 45 hours per week) that prepares individuals for a career in Software as a Service (SaaS) sales. No prior experience is required.
- Digital Skilling & Certifications – One-on-one support to help you develop essential computer skills and earn certifications in Microsoft Office, Excel, and more.
If any of these programs interest you, let us know during our follow-up conversation, and we will help you get started.
Step 4: Finding and Applying for Jobs
Once your resume is ready, it’s time to start applying. Here’s how you can stay on top of new opportunities:
- Check your email regularly – We will send out job alerts with openings from our partner companies.
- Set up job alerts – On the Eastern Kentucky Job Board, click “Create Job Alert” to receive notifications about new positions that match your interests.
- Let us know when you apply – If you submit an application for a job on the Eastern Kentucky Job Board, reach out to us. We can personally refer your resume to the employer, giving you a competitive advantage in the hiring process.
Step 5: Staying Persistent and Focused
Job searching takes time, but staying persistent increases your chances of success. Research shows that individuals who apply for 21 to 80 jobs have a 30 percent chance of receiving an offer.
If you do not receive immediate responses, do not get discouraged. The right opportunity is out there, and we are here to support you through every stage of the process. Whether you need guidance on applications, interview preparation, or career exploration, our team is ready to assist.
