Landing an interview is exciting.
It also means your resume did its job.
If you haven’t already, we encourage you to read our previous articles, How to Build or Update Your Resume and Why You Should Join the EKY Talent Network and Polish Your Resume. Together, these resources will help you create a strong first impression and get your foot in the door.
Now it’s time for the next step.
The interview is your opportunity to show an employer who you are, what you bring to the team, and why you’re the right person for the job.
The good news?
Interviewing is a skill. Like any skill, preparation makes all the difference.
The Best Interview Tip Starts Before the Interview
Successful interviews begin long before you walk into the room.
Preparation builds confidence. Confidence helps you communicate clearly. Clear communication helps employers see your potential.
Here are a few ways to prepare for success.
Research the Employer
Before your interview, spend time learning about the organization.
Visit its website. Read about its mission. Learn about its products or services. Review recent news or accomplishments. Revisit the job description and think about how your skills and experience align with what the employer is looking for.
Employers notice candidates who have taken the time to prepare.
Prepare Real Examples
Many interviews include questions such as:
- Tell me about a time you solved a problem.
- Describe a challenge you overcame.
- Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
Instead of memorizing answers, think about real experiences from work, school, volunteer activities, or everyday life.
A simple approach is to explain:
- The situation
- The task or challenge
- The actions you took
- The results you achieved
Real stories help employers understand not only what you’ve done, but how you think and work.
Practice Out Loud
Reading answers in your head is different from saying them out loud.
Practice with a friend or family member. Record yourself answering common questions. Even practicing in front of a mirror can help you become more comfortable.
The more familiar you become with your answers, the more confident you’ll feel during the interview.
Dress Professionally
Your appearance is part of your first impression.
Choose clean, professional clothing that fits the position you’re seeking. When you’re unsure, it is usually better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.
Arrive Prepared
If your interview is in person, plan your route and arrive about 10 to 15 minutes early.
If your interview is virtual, test your internet connection, camera, and microphone ahead of time. Find a quiet place where you can focus without distractions.
Small details help create a positive first impression.
Ask Questions
An interview is a conversation.
Come prepared with thoughtful questions such as:
- What does success look like in this role?
- What qualities do your most successful employees have?
- What opportunities are available for growth?
- What does a typical day look like?
Good questions demonstrate genuine interest and help you decide whether the position is the right fit for you.
Follow Up
Within 24 hours of your interview, send a brief thank-you email.
Thank the interviewer for their time, express your appreciation for the opportunity, and reaffirm your interest in the position.
A simple follow-up can leave a lasting impression.

During a mock interview, you can:
- Practice answering common interview questions.
- Receive constructive feedback.
- Improve your communication skills.
- Build confidence before the real interview.
- Better understand what employers are looking for.
Sometimes the difference between getting the job and missing the opportunity is simply having someone help you prepare.
That is exactly what the EKY Talent Network is here to do.
