Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) announced today the latest progress report on its EKY Remote Project, a groundbreaking initiative designed to attract remote workers to Eastern Kentucky and stimulate communities through population growth and economic development.
The EKY Remote Project, in collaboration with MakeMyMove, has relocated 87 individuals and families to Eastern Kentucky, with 29 establishing permanent residence — 21 who have moved since July 1, 2024. These new residents are enhancing the region’s social, educational, and economic landscape.
“A new family moving to a community brings more than economic growth — they contribute to the social fabric, strengthen schools, support local businesses, and inspire investments in shared spaces,” said Latasha Friend, EKY Remote Manager.
Economic Impact
The program’s impact is already substantial, generating an estimated $2.4 million in annual economic contributions and $324,700 in annual tax revenue. These figures underscore the value of remote work relocation as a strategy for rural economic development.
Community and Lifestyle Appeal
Eastern Kentucky offers a lifestyle that combines small-town charm with an abundant amount of outdoor recreation opportunities. New residents are attracted by:
- Scenic hiking and ATV trails
- Vibrant local culture, including a rich musical heritage
- Affordable cost of living and family-friendly communities
Testimonials from New Residents
The success of the program is shown in the personal stories of relocated families:
- “It was honestly like coming home, without realizing it. We have never felt so accepted in a community before.” — Katie from NY
- “The draw is the slower lifestyle; I don’t ever want to live in the city again.” — Tiffany from OH
- “Moving to Harlan, KY has been an incredible decision for me. The warm community spirit, natural beauty, and rich cultural heritage make it a special place to call home.” — Pedro from FL
SOAR remains committed to expanding the EKY Remote Project, with plans to attract more remote workers from across the country. The initiative continues to focus on ARC-designated distressed counties, bringing new energy to communities that stand to benefit most from population growth.
