Corbin Community Backpack Program feeds more than nine hundred weekly

Posted on 4 years ago

The Corbin Community Backpack Program feeds close to 1,000 kids a week in Knox and Whitley Counties.

The program started thirteen years ago after church members at First Christian Church in Corbin after members had the idea to help kids going hungry after school.

“I had a principal who told me that on Monday morning, there would be kids lined up outside the door waiting to get in. To get something to eat,” says Chairperson Doris Moore.

Church members say their first time meeting they were happy when they sent home 30 bags.

But donations and community help soon gave way to opportunities for their program.

“I think we realized this was going to be a bigger project than our church could handle,” Moore says.

With the help from church members, businesses, and local volunteers cam together to continue growing the Corbin Community Backpack Program, now filling 900 or more bags a week.

The program now meets on Monday nights when volunteers put the bags together, and Thursday when prep for the next week is done and resource center staff from local schools pick up the bags for the week.
