Shaping Our Appalachian Region is hiring a Community Development Coordinator through the Energy Communities AmeriCorps VISTA program, starting in December 2024. This role offers a unique opportunity to support Eastern Kentucky communities as they transition from coal and power-based economies toward more sustainable futures.

What is the Energy Communities AmeriCorps VISTA Project?

The Energy Communities AmeriCorps VISTA project helps regions affected by the decline in coal mining and power facility jobs. VISTA members work with local organizations to promote environmental stewardship, job training, and economic revitalization. As a Community Development Coordinator, you will help assess community needs, build support systems, and develop economic transformation goals.

About SOAR’s Mission

SOAR was created to address the economic challenges faced by Eastern Kentucky following the decline of the coal industry. We work to connect leaders and organizations in the region to increase economic stability, labor force participation, and long-term growth.

As a Community Development Coordinator, you will:

  • Conduct community outreach to identify needs and resources.
  • Assist with data collection and policy research to support community goals.
  • Collaborate with SOAR’s team to enhance strategic communication efforts.
  • Travel throughout Eastern Kentucky to engage directly with communities.

This position offers a great opportunity to develop skills in leadership, project management, and community engagement.

  • Segal Education Award: $7,395 or cash stipend
  • Healthcare benefits
  • Childcare benefits
  • Relocation allowance
  • Non-competitive eligibility for federal jobs upon completion
  • Professional development and training opportunities

Why Apply?
