Shaping Our Appalachian Region is hiring a Community Development Coordinator through the Energy Communities AmeriCorps VISTA program, starting in December 2024. What is the Energy Communities AmeriCorps VISTA Project?
The Energy Communities AmeriCorps VISTA project helps regions affected by the decline in coal mining and power facility jobs. VISTA members work with local organizations to promote environmental stewardship, job training, and economic revitalization. As a Community Development Coordinator, you will help assess community needs, build support systems, and develop economic transformation goals.
About SOAR’s Mission
SOAR was created to address the economic challenges faced by Eastern Kentucky following the decline of the coal industry. We work to connect leaders and organizations in the region to increase economic stability, labor force participation, and long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities
As a Community Development Coordinator, you will:
- Conduct community outreach to identify needs and resources.
- Assist with data collection and policy research to support community goals.
- Collaborate with SOAR’s team to enhance strategic communication efforts.
- Travel throughout Eastern Kentucky to engage directly with communities.

Pay and Benefits
- Living allowance: $88.39/day (equivalent to $32,262/year)
- Segal Education Award: $7,395 or cash stipend
