Eastern Kentucky has long been known for its breathtaking landscapes, close-knit communities, and deep-rooted traditions. But the region is now gaining attention for something else: opportunity.
In fact, Eastern Kentucky was recognized by MakeMyMove as one of America’s Most Welcoming Places in 2024—a testament to the momentum being built through programs like EKY Remote, the EKY Talent Network, and the commitment to both inviting new residents and supporting those who already call the region home.
A New Chapter for Eastern Kentucky
For decades, the decline of the coal industry forced many Eastern Kentuckians to seek opportunities elsewhere. Coal jobs plummeted by 30% in 2012 alone, stripping more than $1 billion from our regional economy and leaving many counties projected to lose at least 10% of their population by 2050.
But that trend is shifting. With the rise of remote work and a growing interest in small-town living, we saw an opportunity to build a sustainable future for our region—not just by attracting new people, but by ensuring those who already call Eastern Kentucky home can access high-quality, good-paying jobs without having to leave.
A Workforce Strategy Rooted in Community
At the center of this movement is EKY Remote, led by Latasha Friend, which connects Eastern Kentuckians with remote job opportunities that allow them to earn competitive wages while staying in their communities. At the same time, EKY Remote is rolling out the welcome mat for remote workers who want to relocate here, bringing new talent, diverse skill sets, and additional economic investment to the region.
But beyond attracting new workers, we are deeply invested in creating pathways to success for our own people. That’s where the EKY Talent Network comes in. This free resource helps job seekers connect with employers, receive resume assistance, and find remote or in-person jobs. By providing career training, digital skills development, and direct employer partnerships, we are ensuring that Eastern Kentuckians don’t have to leave home to find meaningful work.
We’ve always been told that you have to go somewhere else to be successful. But with over 5,500 people applying to move here, we know Eastern Kentucky is a place of opportunity. More importantly, we’re making sure our own people have access to those same opportunities.”
-Latasha Friend, EKY Remote Manager.
Rolling Out the Red Carpet—For Our Own People
Our approach to workforce development isn’t just about filling jobs, it’s about supporting people through the entire employment journey. Whether it’s helping a local job seeker transition into a remote role or personally welcoming a new resident, the work is hands-on, personal, and rooted in community.
“I had a bakery for over 10 years, and one thing I learned is to treat every client like they were the only client I was ever going to have,” Friend said. “That’s how I approach my work with EKY Remote. Whether you’re a local worker looking for a remote job or a new resident considering a move here, I make sure you feel supported every step of the way.”
This deep sense of community care is what makes Eastern Kentucky different. When new resident Mario Meza moved to the area, he was overwhelmed by the kindness he experienced. After severe flooding threatened his home, Friend checked in on him, and his response was one of gratitude.
In an email, Meza described the community’s response as “the embodiment of agape love coupled with military precision.”
That same personal investment extends to job seekers using the EKY Talent Network. By connecting with local employers, training partners, and companies hiring for remote roles, we are helping more Eastern Kentuckians find fulfilling careers without having to leave their home communities.
A Workforce-Ready Region
Eastern Kentucky is no longer just a place people leave in search of opportunity—it’s a place where opportunity is being created.
With our affordable cost of living, expanding broadband access, and strong sense of community, the region is positioned for economic growth. Programs like Code Kentucky and Generation are training Eastern Kentuckians in high-demand fields such as software development and SaaS sales, preparing them for remote and hybrid careers with national companies.
In addition, our employer partnerships are bringing more remote-friendly jobs to the region, ensuring that companies looking to hire have access to hardworking, skilled Appalachian talent.
“This is about bringing jobs to our people, not just people to our region,” said Kristin Norman, Chief Marketing Officer at SOAR. “We’re focused on bridging the unemployment gap, giving people the skills they need, and making sure high-quality, good-paying jobs are available to Eastern Kentuckians right now.”
A Future Where Eastern Kentuckians Can Stay and Succeed
Our vision is clear: a future where Eastern Kentuckians don’t have to leave to find opportunity. By investing in training, employer connections, and remote work programs, we are ensuring that the region is not just a great place to live, but also a great place to work and build a career.
For local leaders, economic developers, and employers looking to be part of this workforce transformation, the EKY Talent Network is a direct line to skilled workers ready for digital and remote careers.
